Search Strategies

Search strategically

  1. Set a search term to "SUBJECT" in a database search.  This automatically narrows the search to relevant sources.
  2. Use descriptive terms and narrow to specific concepts
  3. Combine the search terms in unique ways
  4. Use an asterisk ( * ) to search on all endings of words.
    • alzheimer* = alzheimer, alzheimer's, alzheimers
    • ethic* = ethic, ethical, ethically, ethics
    • legal* = legal, legality

Possible Search Terms alzheimer* dementia
patient* rights autonomy
    decision-making
    consent
    competence
  care standards
    protocols
    code of conduct
    law*
    legal*
  ethic*
elder*   aged
    seniors

Consider that the newest items might be announced by news releases, on blogs or in news feeds.

But they may have not hit the mass media yet: this could be still a conversation mainly between researchers and scholars.

  • Look for web sites of medical, or legal journals, to browse for the contents of their most recent issue
  • Search the PCC Library databases.  Most result lists are in date order, with the most recent articles at the top.
  • Look for large organizations in the topic area, and look to see if they have a "news" or "issues" section
