EBSCOhost Alcohol & Drug Counseling databases, including PsycINFO & health databases.

search tip: put "quotation marks" around phrases, ex. "control group".
search tip: use an asterisk* to find various endings of a word root, ex. addict* will find addict, addicts, addiction, addicted, addictive.
search tip: look for the "Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals" box. Select it to find peer reviewed articles on your topic.

Hope for the Alcoholic: Scientific Breakthroughs

Alcoholism is a chronic medical disease of the brain, and, as with many other chronic diseases, it requires lifestyle changes, psychological and nutritional counseling, and medication to be most effectively treated. This program features the latest research that explores the differences between the brains of alcoholics and the brains of social drinkers. It shows why a comprehensive approach to treating alcoholism is the best way to get the disease under control. The benefit of support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous is highlighted, and patients’ stories offer hope to those who are dealing with alcohol addiction and alcoholism. (27 minutes)

Women and Alcoholism

Physiological differences between women and men place women at greater risk for physical complications from alcoholism. This program from The Doctor Is In profiles several women from different backgrounds and age groups who are in recovery from that disease. Interviews with medical experts include Michelle Lauria, M.D., of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center; Patrice Muchowski, Sc.D., of AdCare Hospital of Worcester; and Kathleen Mitchell, M.H.S., LCADC, of the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Altered States: A History of Drug Use in America

Whether it’s caffeine, nicotine, or morphine, drugs of choice have defined our lives and history, with sometimes benevolent, sometimes tragic results. This program focuses on the history of America’s drug use and abuse, from the days when the early European settlers became enamored of tobacco, through Prohibition, and up to today. The problems we see today existed in other forms and with other drugs throughout our history. The reasons for using drugs have also remained constant: to ease pain, alleviate boredom, or to expand our consciousness. The program traces the patterns of American drug use and abuse and documents the cultural, social, and political movements that impacted, or were impacted by, the use of drugs. (58 minutes)
