      <description>&lt;p&gt;The Mercury Theatre was founded in New York in 1937 by Orson Welles and John Houseman. Soon afterwards, the company migrated to the radio, changed its name to the Mercury Theatre on the Air, and, between 1938 and 1940, produced a string of live dramas, including the famous--or infamous--&quot;War of the Worlds&quot; broadcast of October 30, 1938.&lt;/p&gt;
