Magazine and journal articles, in library databases

  • PCC subscribes to nearly 100 databases.  Each database is a collection of published writing, mostly magazine and journal articles. This is a sample. For a complete list, go to the PCC Library's Databases A-Z.

  • EBSCOhost locked database
    Search from a wide range of research databases for magazine and journal articles. You have an option to limit your search to peer-reviewed journal articles.
  • Alt-Press Watch locked database
    ProQuest. A full text collection of newspapers, magazines and journals of the alternative and independent press.
  • SIRS Knowledge Source locked database
    ProQuest. Full text information on social issues, science, health, history, government, business, and the arts and humanities.
  • JSTOR locked database
    Full text articles from about 600 scholarly (peer-reviewed) journals in the arts and sciences. Does not include current issues of the journals.
  • Science Direct locked database
    Peer reviewed articles from over 890 health, psychology and life sciences journals. For full text articles, click on SEARCH to get started, then limit your search to SUBSCRIBED Journals.

  • Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Life and Issues Collection locked database
    Gale. This collection of nearly 40 journals aims to provide balanced coverage of this significant aspect of our culture, covering such topics as gender studies, family and marital issues, health aspects, and many more.

Using Google? Here are some tips

"I have a dream"
If you want to find an exact phrase put quotation marks around the words.

salsa –dance
If you want to exclude a word from your search, put a minus sign in front of the word.

Louis 14th +furniture
A plus sign in front of a word means that word must be included in web sites you retrieve. 

fortune-telling
A hyphen will search for all forms of the term, whether spelled as a single word, a phrase, or hyphenated

define:imbroglio
Search for word definitions on the Web. Great for spelling, too!

And don't forget about Google Advanced search. It allows you to search by language, by reading level, by file format and lots of other nifty things.

Need a Topic?

Here are some places to get ideas for topics:

CQ Researcher 25-35 page reports on controversial issues. Each report features a summary, pro/con section, updates and bibliography.

Opposing Viewpoints Select an issue and get background info, pro/con essays and magazine articles. Handout on using Opposing Viewpoints.

SIRS Knowledge Source Browse the list of suggested topics. You'll get background information as well as "viewpoint" (pro/con) essays.

Viewpoint essays

These three databases have viewpoints essays.

Opposing Viewpoints is primarily viewpoint essays, with some news and background information.

SIRS Knowledge Source In the "Issues Researcher" section, browse the list of suggested topics. You'll get contest and news articles as well as viewpoint (pro/con) essays.

CQ Researcher Report contain a pro/con section with an author -- but the essays are short. You might need to find other articles by that author. The bibliographies can be useful.

Newspaper editorials are often give credible arguments on current issues. Unfortunately, newspaper editorials are often not signed (author not identitied); however, op-ed articles are signed.

Infotrac Newsstand A collection of more than 1,000 newspapers. For editorials, go to Advanced Search, then select Document Type: Editorial.

Wall Street Journal National and international news, with strong financial analysis. For editorials, click on More Search Options, then Document type: Editorial.

AltPress Watch Newspaper, magazine and journal articles from the alternative and independent press. For editorials, click on More Search Options, then Document type: Editorial.

Other Googles

Google Scholar Find scholarly articles on the web. You can set your computer to find the full text of many articles by linking to PCC Libraries. Here's a tutorial on getting full-text articles from Google Scholar.

Google Books Tons of books are available online from Google Books.

Google News What just happened? News articles and feeds from all over the world.

There are lots more specialized Google searches! Go to Google and look at the top of the screen for options.
